Ban IP to Stop WordPress Comment Spam Forever

WordPress spam comments is a big problem, but how can we stop, ban , block spam comments before they hit our wordpress blogs. A simple plugin can ban IP addresses of spammers and significantly reduce spam comments on your blog.

Wordpress Anti Spam Tools

Wordpress Spam Blocking Plugins: Most wordpress blogs use an amazing anti-comment spam tool called Akismet, but it is smart at identifying spam comments and moving them to the Spam Comments folder (it has blocked over a million spam comments here and you can’t even think of turning Akismet off). But what if you have to manually fish out any valid comments among hundreds of spam comments?

Wordpress Comment Moderation: If you navigate to the WordPress Admin > Settings > Discussion, you will find 2 options

1. Comment Moderation will hold a comment in the queue if it contains X (you decide, I keep it at 1) or more links. (A common characteristic of comment spam is a large number of hyperlinks.) So when a comment contains any of these words in its content, name, URL, e-mail, or IP, it will be held in the moderation queue. 2. Comment Blacklist - When a comment contains any of these words in its content, name, URL, e-mail, or IP, it will be marked as spam. You can read more about these WordPress spam combating options.

So you block IP addresses via the blacklist, it will move all such comments to the spam queue, but that still means work for bloggers to screen for valid comments (unless you prefer to click “Delete all Spam”, which will also delete any useful comments, and invite query from readers as to why you deleted their comments). Did you know many valid comments are often blocked by Akismet and affected commentators can request Akismet to despam your valid comments.

Of course you can edit your .htaccess file to block some IPs, but how many times can you keep doing that manually?

Welcome to WP-Ban, a very powerful wordpress plugin which helps you easily ban users by IP, IP Range, host name and referrer url from visiting your WordPress’s blog and prevent spam from ever reaching your comments. It will display a custom ban message when the banned IP, IP range, host name or referrer url tries to visit your blog.

Ever since I have enabled this plugin, my spam comments are nearly zero and I can now easily screen and approve any comment wrongly labelled as spam.

But there is a word of caution, do NOT block your own IP. Do NOT use wild cards to block a large number of IPs or domains carelessly or you could be blocking thousands of your own readers and search engine bots. If you simply block the IPs which occur too frequently in your spam comments, ban those IPs and see your spam reduce in minutes. Thanks to John Chow where I first saw it in action.

One, the new readers can know what the old posts were. The second is that, the older posts get more exposure and more visits through publishing them again. I posted my Best Posts too.

Site Goals for next year: New Year is the time to take new resolutions and set new targets. Many bloggers have made their site goals public. Making site goals public is like committing it to your readers. Such posts create more responsibility in the blogger himself and act as a drive to achieve them.

Stats Analysis and Review: Year ending is the best time to Review the site goals of the previous year and mark which all you checked-out. If you failed somewhere, analyze the reasons and add them to your next year’s site goals.

Awarding Top Contributors and Lots of Thanks Giving: Year Ending is the time to thank all the top contributors of your blog. Top Commentators, Guest Authors, and those who helped you throughout the year must not be missed out.

Preview of the Next Year: Giving a slight insight into what to expect the following year is useful to generate curiosity and interest in the readers. Doing this might keep the new visitors to keep coming back.

Carl Ocab, a kid blogger who started making money online as a 13 year old blogger, has launched a new project called YoungestBlogger, an attempt to list the top 100 youngest bloggers busy blogging and making money online. The list automatically updates everyday based on the blogger age, Google pagerank, Technorati rank and Alexa rank.

I checked out the list to find some fascinating blogs. On top of the list is The University Kid, run as a young entrepreneur blog about internet marketing, blogging tips and how to make money online. Only one blog has PR6 and is called The Blog At The End of the Universe with an interesting description “nothing I say may be true, but that’s exactly how things are”. The youngest blogger is from Philippines who blogs at Ek Kasi, Bata!, and started to blog when he was just five years old.

I knew only about Michael from WPCandy (a popular blog about WordPress), Shankar from KillerTechTips (a long time reader of QOT), and Sumesh from Techzilo (a previous guest blogger on QOT).

In case you are wondering, the secret formula for blog ranking is Age: 20%, Google PR: 25%, Technorati: 30%, and Alexa: 25%. Add your blog if you are below 18 years and are actively blogging; you could become famous.

Its not surprising how technology is affecting kids today. The youngest kid bloggers will surely gain as much attention as the oldest bloggers. Even Barack Obama had to give recognition to a 7-year old political blogger!

Why Broadband Internet Speeds are Slow Today

If you are wondering why your broadband internet connection speed is crawling, you are not alone. 3 undersea submarine cables have broken down by a ship anchor, slowing internet traffic in 13 countries accross the world.

When Youtube videos get jumpy play speeds, I always check my internet speed at Airtel Broadband Speed test to detect bandwidth speeds and connection quality. If you do not use an Airtel broadband connection, you can try SpeedTest to find you net speed. Since yesterday the internet speed has been half of what I buy (512 Kbps unlimited). Airtel customer support replied that it would be fixed within 48 hours. Apparently the problem is bigger than isolated few users.

Ships Cut Internet Undersea Cables

The affected cables are called Sea Me We 4 (SMW 4), Sea Me We 3 (SMW 3) and FLAG EA run under the sea between Egypt and Italy and carry 90% of all data between Europe and the Middle East. The Times of India reports

Rajesh Chharia, president, Internet Service Providers Association of India, says, “The cables are expected to be down till the end of the month. One of the two maintenance boats in the Mediterranean, the Raymond Croze, a France Telecom marine cable ship, will reach the location on December 21.”

According to a France Telecom report, while Maldives is 100% down, there has been an 82% disruption in India. Among other countries affected are Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE, Malaysia, Pakistan, Qatar and Zambia.

Reuters Africa reports that

“There are two theories: either the anchor of a ship, which could have displaced them … or an earthquake. We think it’s the first theory,” spokesman Louis-Michel Aymard said. The “Raymond Croze” cable ship was expected to reach the scene at 2200 GMT on Sunday, when the remotely operated “Hector” robot would start a search for the cables, which could have been dragged several kilometres, Aymard added.

The damage to the SEA-ME-WE3, SEA-ME-WE4 and FLAG cables caused varying degrees of disruption from Zambia to India and Taiwan. “We think we will get SEA-ME-WE4 repaired by December 25. For 4 and 3, it should be done by the end of the year, or maybe January 1,” Aymard said.

So it seems the internet speed problem will persist for a few more days for all internet service providers in the region. But considering this is happening the second time now, it highlights the vulnerability of the whole cable system, which can easily be broken by a mere ship anchor and disrupt internet services across a large part of the world!

The Bivings Group 2008 study analyzes the web features of America’s largest newspapers and presents an overview of how newspapers are optimizing their business models to use the Internet as a news source. They examined the websites of the top 100 newspapers in the United States, as determined by circulation (via the Audit Bureau of Circulations) and evaluated them for presence of lack of various web features.

• 58% of newspapers offered some form of user generated content (like photos, video and articles) in 2008 compared to 24% in 2007.
• 75% of newspapers now accept article comments in some form, compared to 33% in 2007.
• 10% of newspapers had social networking tools built into their sites in 2008, compared to 5% in 2007.
• 76% of newspapers offered a Most Popular view of content in some form (Most Emailed, Most Blogged, Most Commented, etc.), compared to 51% in 2007.
• 92% of newspapers now include integration with external social bookmarking sites like Digg and del.icio.us compared to 7% in 2006
• 100% of newspapers provided some form of contextual advertising, such as Google Adwords.
• Now 57% of newspapers offer PDF editions, 20% offer chatting options, 96% offer local weather information, 40% utilize SMS alerts and 70% offer community event calendars.
• Now only 11% of websites require registration to view full articles, compared to 29% in 2007
• All 100 newspapers provide some type of RSS feed, compared to only 3 papers in this group in 2007.

Indeed these finding show how much the internet has influenced the newspapers, who have gone all out to adopt new web features and technologies like social networking, user generated content, contextual advertising, RSS feeds, pdf editions; and those newspapers who do not embrace the new web will loose out on readership.

The BBC iPlayer lets you watch BBC programmes from the past week. Now a newer version of BBC iPlayer for Mac and Linux computers, lets these users stream and download BBC programmes.

Currently if you are in the UK and connected to the internet you can play programmes from the past seven days and watch them on the website through Click to Play (streaming). This now works on Windows, Macs, Linux, Nintendo Wii and iPhones. You can also download TV programmes and store them on your computer for up to 30 days if your computer supports the BBC iPlayer Download Manager. However, if you are outside the UK and connected to the internet you can listen live and listen again to most of the BBC radio programmes only.

The new version of the iPlayer has been written with Adobe’s AIR technology which aims to make it possible to create applications that can be downloaded to your computer, rather than just embedded in browser web pages as is possible with the widely used Flash software. BBC iPlayer has been available for a long time for use with Microsoft’s Windows XP as it used Microsoft’s digital rights management (DRM) system to enforce viewing restrictions.

Understanding Shared, Virtual and Dedicated Hosting

The web hosting industry and its thousands of providers offer a vast number of hosting solutions today. But the three most common “packages” of services are shared hosting, virtual and dedicated hosting. Whether you’re setting up your first ever website or creating your 31st, when it comes down to choosing a hosting provider, these are your options. But what kind of hosting do they indicate, how do they differ from each other and which one is best for you?

Shared Hosting

Sharing a server with up to hundreds of other websites, you will be limited in many ways. Your hosting provider, like any other, can offer shared web hosting based on the premonition that its customers actually won’t use all the “storage space” and “bandwidth” that they are promised.

Fact is that most shared hosting clients are beginner webmasters running small websites with traffic volumes that only require a fraction of the space and bandwidth that is included in the hosting deal. That is why hosting companies can promise “unlimited” storage space or bandwidth - since you will probably never exceed more than a small percentage of the GB’s your are promised in storage space and bandwidth.

However, as you sign up to a shared hosting account you will normally agree to a certain percent of the server CPU usage that you are not allowed to exceed. And though a rare occurrence, sudden peaks in website traffic and data transfer may cause your website to exceed the limit. The hosting provider then has the right to temporarily seize your website.

Virtual Private Hosting

Now, the remaining two hosting options are in many ways your rescue from shared hosting, as they both indicate your own server – your own dedicated server. A virtual private server (VPS) also called Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS) is the solution that rightfully can be placed between shared hosting and a dedicated server.

While physically still sharing a server with other hosting clients, a VPS offer an environment of an own server. One single server can hence be divided into several individual units that run on their own operative system and can be individually rebooted. However, you will still be sharing the physical server’s CPU-usage, disk space and bandwidth with other VPS users.

Dedicated Hosting

Of these three hosting options, Dedicated hosting is perhaps the most extensive and all-inclusive. It is also the one hosting option that can use the adjective “unlimited” in its rightful meaning. You will get a server, dedicated to your websites and your websites only. No more sharing, official or unofficial. All storage space, bandwidth and CPU capacity is for you to use. The only limitation is based on the actual performance standards and size of the server. And that can always be upgraded.

To summarize – compared to a dedicated server, your own physical server, a VPS is simply an economic solution by hosting providers to be able to offer a dedicated server environment to a more affordable price. A virtual private server should at most be seen as the middle stop between shared and dedicated hosting. A virtual private server or shared web hosting are still merely economically bound solutions, regardless to your needs, and are far more limited than a dedicated server.

The Landrush phase will open on 3 February 2009 and closes on 23 March 2009 wherein applications will only be accepted through ICANN accredited .tel registrars and domain registration will be open to everyone. Any domain that is not registered during Sunrise will be eligible for Landrush registration at a premium price. General Availability opens at 15:00 GMT on 24 March 2009.

ICANN has delegated to Telnic Limited, the .tel Sponsoring Organization, the responsibility for developing, implementing and policing certain policies related to the .tel Top Level Domain and its community. Google Adsense might not be sending out Christmas gifts to its top Adsense publishers this year. Its dissapointing, but it seems the global recession and job layoffs are taking their toll on festivities this year.

As impatient Adsense publishers searched the forums looking for Adsense gifts, Amit spotted AdsenseAdvisor, an official Google Adsense representative who remarked in the Webmaster World Forums that

" We really appreciate the work you all put into building great sites. However, we feel that gift-giving is not the most appropriate gesture this year given the current global economic climate. I know you may be disappointed, but I hope you can understand our efforts to be fiscally responsible in these times.

As the discussion continues, I am sure publishers will be disappointed. It was a nice year-end gesture from Google and surely it didn’t cost a fortune since they sent it out only to a select few Adsense publishers only. A new web browser called BlackBird promises to be the best browser for the African American community. Blackbird application makes it easier to find African American related content on the Internet and allows Blacks to interact with other members of the African American community online by sharing stories, news, comments and videos via Blackbird.

A major feature is called Blackbird Grapevine, their social bookmarking service. You need to join the Blackbird Community to shares webpages and articles by submitting them into categories. Then members of the Blackbird Community can Vote Up these webpages and articles. The top webpages and articles are displayed in Most Shared (a button on the Blackbird Browser). To access BlackbirdTV you will need to click on the “Video” link on the Blackbird Services Toolbar. Once you click on the Video button the sidebar opens up with BlackbirdTV channels. Black search prioritizes sites that focus on African-American content and information enabling you to find content that is typically buried in most search engines.

Although there are so many browsers you never heard of, a web browser delivering content by race is a unique concept. Blackbird is operated by 40A, Inc., a company founded by three African American entrepreneurs. Blackbird Partner program will donate 10% of its 2009 revenue to charitable and educational organizations that are serving the African American community.

Blackbird will run on Windows only and does not support Linux-based and Mac-based computers. Its is powered by Mozilla, which also runs the popular Firefox web browser. Download BlackBird browser (Its still beta).
